2010 SOCCER WORLD CUP: Top 10 stars of the world cup

The first Soccer World Cup to be organised in Africa has come and gone. We chanted the slogan: Feel it, it is here. The slogan which over time became: Phillip eats here!
The month long tournament drew its final curtain on the 11th July 2010 with a match between Spain and Netherlands. Both teams yet to lift the trophy, the Dutch being twice in a final.

The tournament commenced in the beginning of the South African winter season, but many braved the cold to view the matches. But it wasnt our coldest winter, the world cup stars started a heat wave during the event.
The top 10 stars of the Soccer World Cup 2010 were:

10. Africa

For the first time the event landed on our shores, Africa was an excellent host and proved wrong all the naysayyers who doubted us. How does humble pie taste?

9. Pulpo Paul- Psychic octopus, Paul

He correctly predicted the outcomes of the match winners in advance! Please save him from being sushi or calamari, humans! Keep him alive for 2014 Brazil world cup predictions so I can make some bets and get rich!

8. Diego Forlan- Uruguay

He steered his country to the Semi finals with outstanding striking ability, especially from set pieces, Bafana was one of the victims of Forlan's prowess. He was the picture of composure when he took the setpieces and could teach other strikers a thing or two.
Uruguay finished 4th in the competition as Paul predicted!
Diego Forlan won the golden ball award 2010 as Player of the tournament.

7. Robin van Persie- Netherlands

The Netherlands were a formidable side and looked set to capture the final victory. It boasted in form strikers like Van Persie, Sneijer, and Robben! The Duth were in the final with Spain and ended up second for the third time in the history of the tournament.

6. Lukas Podolski- Germany

The 2010 soccer spectacular had a plethora of young talent. The German team had the youngest team around, with Lukas Podolski, and Thomas Mueller who was the leading goal scorer and best young player for 2010.
Germany finished third in the tournament.

5. Javier Chicharito Hernandez- Mexico

The Mexican team had some really good football as well as good looking players. It's leading striker was Hernandez, who has been signed onto the Manchester United team by Sir Alex Ferguson.
Hernandez paired with playmaker, Giovani dos Santos were an electrifying duo! Dos Santos was in the running for the best player of the 2010 tournament.

4. Giovani dos Santos- Mexico

3. Kevin Prince Boateng- Ghana

The Black Stars carried the hopes of the motherland, Africa, by going the furthest in the tournament. The team had a good mix between experienced and young players, which saw them reach the Quarter finals. They were unlucky to be eliminated by the hand of Suarez- Uruguay, and did not progress through to the semi's.
Boateng scored in the round of 16 match against the United States.

2. Andre Ayew- Ghana

The son of Abedi Pele has certainly come from under the shadow of his father to be an outstanding player in his own right and an asset to the team.
Ayew was a nominee for the best young player of the 2010 tournament.

1. Jesus Navas

The 1st half of the final match on July 11th was a dull afair with no goals.
The action for the Spanish began with the inclusion of Cesc Fabregas.
The Spaniards realised they needed a miracle in order to hoist the trophy in victory, and things changed to their favour when Jesus Navas entered the field. The fireworks flew and chances for la Furia Roja materialised.
Iniesta capitalised with the only goal of the match to catapult Spain victory.
Captain, Ikke Cassilas, won the best goalkeeper of the 2010 worldcup.
Spain, 2010 World Cup victors and Fifa fairplay team of the tournament!

2010 SOCCER WORLD CUP: THE BIG G.U.N.S!

The four teams left to battle it out for the coveted world cup are:
Germany
Uruguay
Netherlands
Spain
and what do you have? G.U.N.S!
The big guns are out and blazing.

The Netherlands

The first semi final was between Uruguay and the Netherlands. Uruguay, the only team left representing South America. They faced one of the three European teams, the Netherlands, who are in their best form on the pitch. The match was played out at the gorgeous Green Point stadium, Cape Town.
I got an invite to go watch the match live at the stadium, but had to decline, my mom is experiencing poor health. What a great gesture though, ~Infinite thanks!~

The match got off to a tentative start, until the magnificent goal came from Giovanni Van Bronkhorst for the Dutch. The tempo of the game improved and Diego Forlán equalised for the Uruguains.
The first half ended with both teams on 1-1.

The second half had more action and saw 3 more goals scored. Sneijder softly slipped the ball past Uruguaian goalkeeper, Muslera. The third Dutch goal came in quick succession, a header by Arjen Robben.
Uruguay's biggest hope of coming back into the match, Diego Forlan, was taken off the pitch towards the last minutes of the game.
At 90 minutes Uruguay won a free kick, it was expertly taken and they scored their second goal. The game went into stoppage time and Uruguay was on the attack but the score ended 3-2 and the Dutch going to paint Johannesburg Orange on Sunday 11 July 2010.
It looks like Uruguay missed the goalkeeping skills of Luis Suarez!

Tonight's semi final is between Spain and Germany. Germany have been on fire, with mostly a youthful team. The team has shocked a few naysayyers who didnt think the team would go far without the expertise of experienced players like Michael Ballack. But the young players in the squad took the spotlight and shone, Podolski was a revelation!
Will coach, Joachim Loew, come out triumphant against the Spaniards?

Spain
Spain didnt start their world cup campaign on the right foot, with a loss to Switzerland, but they came back and showed their class by ending at the top of their group log.
On their journey to the semis, they beat Paraguay and sent Portugal packing home.
The team has big names in Torres, Fabregas and Villa.

Fabregas

David Villa is a contender for this year's golden boot and will surely add another goal to his tally against Germany tonight.

The 2010 World Cup final is set to be an all European affair!

2010 SOCCER WORLD CUP: Drama

The Quarter finals have been brimming with DRAMA and shock upsets.
Favourites Brazil, on their way to capturing a 6th world cup, lost to an indomitable Netherlands side. The South Americans, coached by former player, Dunga, were ahead in goals. The Netherlands came from behind to snatch a victory, stifling the Samba dance.

The Black Stars of Ghana's chances of being the first African team to reach the semis were obliterated by Uruguay.
Ghana's Muntari scored the opening goal just before the close of the first half, 1-0.
Diego Forlan equalized for Uruguay with a setpiece that curled past the goalkeeper into the back of the net.
The match went into extra time. With 30seconds of extra time remaining, Ghana received a free kick that saw major scrambling in the box. The Uruguaian keeper was out of position, the striker, Suarez stood on the goal line. He prevented a goal, headed by Appiah, by using his hands. He was spotted and received the RED card, becoming the 12th player to be sent off the field.

Ghana received a penalty, and the golden striker, Asemoah Gyan stood over the Jobulani ball, carrying the hopes of all 800 million Africans. He kicked and the ball hit the goalposts. You could hear a pin drop when thousands of hearts stopped beating.

The game went into a penalty shoot-out. The first two players, on both teams, scored. Both the 3rd players missed. Ghana missed the 4th. Uruguay scored and tore the African heart apart.
Luis Suarez became a hero for his country, and the most despised player in Africa.

The Black Stars of Ghana became the Black Stars of Africa! We look forward to the brilliance of this courageous team in the 2014 Brazil World Cup.

Maradona's Argentinian side will meet their South American compatriots, Brazil, at the airport. This team looked like potential winners of the tournament.
Tevez scored thrilling goals. Higuain was a golden boot contender with 4 goals.

Lionel Messi was instrumental in setting up the goals which saw them reach the Quarter finals.
Germany took an early lead. Argentina equalised but the linesman had his flag up, the goal was disallowed as an offside. The Germans carried on with the onslaught they brought on England and annihilated Argentina by 4 goals to none.

Germany meets Spain in their next encounter.
The other semi final is between Uruguay and the Netherlands.
I have no favourites at all out of these four teams left, I will back Spain though to win. This world cup has been an anti-climax, personally.
