Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth.
Never mind.
You’ll not understand the power and beauty of your youth
Until they’ve faded.
But trust me, in twenty years,
You will look back at photos of yourself
And recall how fabulous you really looked at the time.
You are not as fat as you imagine.

finances for our kiddies
Whitney Houston sings, “I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way”. This lyric is from her hit song- the greatest love of all, a powerful and most empowering song. That lyric holds so much truth about our children, they are our future and we need to invest in their future. We as parents need to pave the way for our financial future so that our children can learn the way from us. Children mirror their parents as we are the main influencers of behaviour.
My mom, Mampandla, handled her finances well and was a good role model to emulate. She had bought her own car and paid off the bond of her own home. She had credit which she paid up on time each month. Except her monthly salary, she looked for ways to supplement that income.
This year I bought my son his first investment, an Exchange Trade Fund (ETF). It’s a learning experience for me. I used the online application tool, printed and signed the documents and sent them back to the company administering the ETF.
You can buy ETF’s on a debit order from as little as just R300 per month, or you can make a lump sum contribution from as little as R1000. I took the lump sum option, and learned that R1000 only buys one ETF; I had thought that the lump sum contribution can be spread over different ETFs. Remember, there are around 70 ETFs to choose from.
So I had just one choice to make out of that 70 and I went with the Satrix Indi 25. The Satrix Indi 25 tracks 25 JSE listed industrial companies. It is a basket of the 25 JSE listed companies, so your investment is not dependent on just one company, it is spread among these 25 companies- this offers diversification on your investment.
I came across an online article on Junior Investment Clubs; the club is called Ujamaa Junior Investment Club and is based in America. The article states, “Like many Americans, Damon Williams joined a stock investment club to eventually put his children through college. Unlike many of those Americans, Damon is just 11 years old.”
The children in this club, aged between 11 and 18 years, meet on a Saturday to discuss the research they have done on which companies they are likely to invest in. They have already acquired the skill on researching which companies are worth investing in. Financial literacy at a young age can only mean financial prosperity for these kids. How many of these junior clubs such as these do we have in our country?
Last year, I began reading about Warren Buffett; he’s an extremely wealthy value investor. According to an article I read about him, his very first investment was made at the age of 11 years old. Here is a passage from that article, “At 11 years old, Buffett buys his first stock – 6 shares of Cities Service (now known as CITGO – an Oil company) at $38 per share. He bought 3 for himself and 3 for his sister Doris.”
Teaching financial literacy to children from a young age will form a different way of thinking. Instead of only thinking about learning in order to get a cushy job, they can learn how to be entrepreneurs and build their own companies. They could even grow companies and have them publicly listed at a stock exchange.
The children are our future, lets teach them financial literacy and they will lead the way to financial freedom!

Money Challenge 2015
Early in the year (2015) I came across an interesting article on the BizNews website. It’s a very practical idea for saving money for the 52 weeks in the year; it’s called the 52 week challenge, by Dawn Ridler (a financial planner).
“It entails setting aside specific amounts every week of the year, starting with only R10 this week.”
Dawn writes, “If you don’t already have a ‘rainy day’ fund, this is a great time to start one. Make it fun. How about this 52-week challenge? For each week of the year save Ten Rand times the week of the Year. R10 in week one, R20 in week two and so on.”
As I read this article about the 52 week challenge, I thought “what a brilliant idea, I will do it!” I took out a notebook, and jot down the amounts I would be saving per week. R10 for each week of the year sound simple enough, until you get to, let’s say week 10, and you must fork out a R100, followed by R110 in the following week. Let alone, those final weeks in the year, on week 50 that would be a R500, and R510 the week after, closing off with R520 in the last week of the year!
Should you be able to manage sticking diligently to this 52 week challenge, you would have saved R13 780 throughout the year, which is a great achievement!
Personally, this 52 week challenge is not for me, but I wasn’t discouraged. I found many other variations to this challenge; you could do it fortnightly, even on a monthly basis. Hence the “R50 money challenge”, you start off by saving a R50 per month and increasing it with increments of R50 each month. E.g. the following month you will save R100, and R150 the month after that. If you were to start in March 2015 with a R50 savings, you would end up on R2750 by December 2015.
You could do the challenge individually, or as part of a group- which is more fun and will also keep you accountable for your savings goal.
Take up the challenge; choose whichever savings plan that suits your wallet. Save to invest!

Living a dream over the weekend
My friend, Asa, from Sweden is my personal angel.
On this last trip to Cape Town, she told me that her name means "goddess" and what an appropriate name for such a wonderful woman. She has been such a gift in my life.
We connected during a tourism course in 2007. And over time exchanging emails, we met again when she would bring tourist groups to Cape Town. And somehow our connection evolved over time from business to friendship. And a friend to have in her.
And on this latest trip, she created a fantastic weekend experience for myself and my little Siz. The pictures will tell the story...
Passing time
I am on top of the world...um tree stump?...no, I am on top of the world
Right at home at the Royale
Thank you Asa. Thank you Universe. Thank you for this amazing experience, it was living a dream!

Do you know the secret?
THE SECRET.
The secret to life? What is your secret to living?
Belief in a higher power, belief in a cause, a belief in a better tomorrow, these are some the secrets to living.
The belief that you were placed here on Earth in order to fulfill a purpose that only you could realise.
Have you found your purpose?
What is purpose? Is it waking up early at dawn, going through traffic, to make a profit for someone else? (can you detect the jaded tone?)
Something is happening to me, a new lease on life given to me.
One day in October 2014, a friend visited me, asking to borrow some reading material. I went through the bag containing some books, I gave him a copy of Nadine Gordimer's "the conservationist" (a book which I did not finish).
As I rummaged through the bag of 2nd books I had bought years ago, I came across a copy of "Rich Dad Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki.
I picked it up, and read through it. This would be my second time reading the book, the first time I didn't get through the whole book. But this time, I was engrossed. I could not put it down, I couldn't wait to turn to the next page, to the next chapter. Before I knew it, I had finished reading the whole book in the space of one week. The book just resonated with me at this time, in this journey with the Get Rich Savings Club. I have shared the book, and I can hardly wait to get it back to re-read it again, at a slower pace.
The book isn't just financial advice, but it also contains some philosophical gems, such as "it is easier to change yourself than anyone else." The book even has an aspect on how positive thoughts lead to positive results.
Then, I was reading up online, on financial articles, and looking up inspiring quotes when I came across the book "the Power of Positive Thinking" by Norman Vincent Peale. This book I had read in High School. I downloaded it, and tried to read one chapter a day. I read online about visualisation, affirmations, and ways to improve living. And through this journey I came upon an online copy of "THE Secret" by Rhonda Byrne, which I downloaded. For some reason, the PDF file of this book wouldn't open, so I didn't get to read it then. I continued to read up online about the Secret.
Then this January, my little boy was on my p.c, watching cartoon dvd's. And in the background, of the many screens that were open, was the copy of the Secret, which I had downloaded last year. It was open. I could read it. At that moment I was filled with infinite gratitude and love towards my genius son. I haven't as yet read through the whole book.
What is the Secret?
The secret is the LAW OF ATTRACTION!
Your thoughts, create feelings, and these thoughts and feelings then attract similar experiences/circumstances which validate your thoughts and feelings.
Thoughts become things.
Here is to 2015, and to living THE SECRET!
